Don’t Let Indecision Stop You | DWC Member Spotlight: Micheal Woodruff

As writers, we face a lot of enemies: procrastination, fear of failure, creative fatigue, jealousy, and so many other hurdles.

Here’s an enemy I bet you haven’t thought of: indecision.

Indecision is a horrible enemy that can kill your progress. Here’s how it works. You’re trying to decide between three book ideas, what your website domain name should be, what color paper to use for your printed book, what your book title should be, and a million other decisions we have to make as a writer.

If you’re a perfectionist, you will avoid making a decision because you’re waiting for more information. You’re always thinking that you have to do more research or gather more information before you make a good decision.

This is a recipe for disaster. Just based on the information you have, consult with a couple of other people if it’s a big decision. Then, make the decision.

The baseball great Yogi Berra famously said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” The great thing about the book world is that you can always release another edition or make changes to your files. There are very few decisions in the book world that can’t be corrected in some way.

Indecision is a thief that will steal your joy, give you lots of anxiety, and keep you from making progress. Remember that your 90% is other people’s 100%. Don’t let indecision rob you of success.

Today’s Challenge: What decision is keeping you from making progress today? Make the decision and get moving! You can always go back and correct it later.
