Humans are emotional creatures. We like to believe we do things based on reason and logic. Yet if you stop and examine your actions, you’ll see they are mostly driven by emotions.
It’s especially true when it comes to bad behavior. Eating unhealthy food, procrastinating when you know you should be working, avoiding hard conversations, watching viral cat videos for hours, yelling at your kids… it’s all driven by emotion, not logic.
We do the same with our writing. We avoid working on that difficult chapter because it requires a lot of concentration. We don’t support our friend’s new book because we’re secretly jealous. We don’t do that extra round of edits because we’re impatient. We don’t publish the book that’s been sitting on our computer for a year because we’re afraid of what others will think.
Think about the emotions driving the behavior keeping you from your writing dreams. Most of the time, they’re telling you lies such as you’re not worthy, you’ll never succeed, or it’s going to fail anyway.
That’s fear talking. Fear raises its ugly head anytime you’re taking a risk or trying something new. Fear gets its kicks by telling you lies. Don’t listen to it. Instead, listen to that still, small voice encouraging you to keep going.
Today’s Challenge: What emotions are you feeling right now? Are they telling you the truth about yourself?
