Most writers feel that writing and publishing one book is a big enough accomplishment in itself. I’m excited that my guest today is here to help us think about another strategy that can involve a lot more people and produce books more quickly.

The strategy and type of book we’re talking about is an anthology series. As you might already know, an anthology is a book that contains chapters or sections by different authors.

My guest is Laura Di Franco. She is the owner of Brave Healer Productions where she’ll help you share your story, build your business, and change the world.

Laura is a multiple-time Amazon bestselling author with three decades of expertise in holistic physical therapy, a third-degree black belt, and 30 published books. She is a champion of entrepreneurs who want to grow their health-based practices.

Her publishing services, collaborative book projects, writing workshops and retreats, business strategy sessions, and online writing circle are just some of the ways she helps talented professionals maximize their professional impact.

In this conversation, Laura shares why anthologies are such a valuable type of book, how the process works when you have multiple authors involved, how you can get started, and the details of how to make this model work financially.

The office of the President of the United States gets a lot of attention for various reasons, but have you ever looked at our Presidents through the lens of the books they wrote?

If you’ve never considered this, you’re in for a treat today because my guest is Craig Fehrman, author of the excellent book Author in Chief: The Untold Story of Our Presidents and the Books They Wrote. The Wall Street Journal called it “one of the best books on the American presidency to appear in recent years.”

Craig is a writer and historian who lives in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife and kids. We had a blast in this conversation, and I got to ask Craig all my questions on this topic. He shares the background of the book, how he conducted research, the value of books in presidential campaigns, the two types of presidential books, the place of ghostwriters in presidential books, and his detailed process for getting endorsements for the book.

If you love books, U.S. History, or learning about Presidents, you’ll love this conversation.

One of the most critical truths of living in the modern world is that we are all connected. As the poet John Donne wrote, “No man is an island.” (And neither is any woman, of course.) And because you are the type of writer who wants to be generous, the kind of writer who gives more than you take, you will want to discover ways to support the important work of other writers.

After all, the world needs more great writing, and you also want to continue expanding your relationships. Here are five ways to accomplish both things.

  1. Write personal messages to authors whose books you enjoy. You can find email addresses, social media accounts, or at the very least, website contact forms for almost any author in the world. Let them know how their book impacted you and why you loved it. It will mean the world to them.
  2. Engage with their non-book content. Most authors have email lists and social media accounts. Many also have their own podcasts or video channels. Like, share, comment, subscribe, and support the material they are creating.
  3. Buy their books, share them on social media, and give copies away to your friends. You not only support the author’s livelihood, you also become your friends’ favorite person by giving them unexpected gifts.
  4. Write book reviews. After you post a review on an online retailer site, take a screenshot and post it on social media. Make sure to tag the author. Reviews are the lifeblood of an author’s business. If you want others to leave book reviews for you, you must do the same for others.
  5. Share quotes from their books. You can do this via social media, email, podcasts, or other means. It’s a simple way to spread a book’s message in a short, digestible way.

None of these actions have to be complicated. If you just take five minutes per day to do one or two of these, it will make a huge difference for the authors you support… and will grow your own influence as well.

Daily Question: Who are three authors you could support with these strategies in the next twenty-four hours?

There are many ways to market yourself as an author, but, on today’s episode, we will explore one of the most effective strategies—being a guest on other people’s podcasts.

My guest is Kim Stewart. She is a marketing strategist who helps Christian authors meet new readers and market their messages by guesting on podcasts. She’s also the host of the Book Marketing Mania podcast where she and her guests share what’s working to market books online. Her sweet spot is strategy, and working behind the scenes is her jam! Kim lives in Dallas with her husband, two young adult sons, and a very spoiled Lab named Loki.

Kim gives us the low-down on podcast guesting and why it’s important for authors. You’ll also learn how to find relevant podcasts to pitch, how to build relationships with podcast hosts, what to say in your pitch, how to repurpose the episode once it’s released, and much more.

This is a strategy I have successfully used many times, and, of course, I have guests on this podcast every week. This is an episode you’ll need to listen to a couple of times to take in all of Kim’s wisdom!

David Hancock is a Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author, and the founder of Morgan James Publishing. As the founder of Morgan James Publishing, David was selected for Fast Company Magazine’s Fast 50 for his leadership, creative thinking, significant accomplishments, and incredible impact on the industry over the last ten years.

I wanted to have David as a guest not only because of his obvious connection with books, but also to talk about the importance of being an author in the first place. David saw firsthand how powerful it can be to have books of your own, which is why he started Morgan James in the first place.

Here is something I don’t often get to say about podcast guests: we also wrote a book together! Along with our co-author Bobby Kipper, David and I collaborated on a book that will be published through Morgan James next May. It’s titled Performance Driven Giving, and it’s a follow-up to David and Bobb’s first book in this series, Performance Driven Thinking. I’ll share more on that early next year closer to the release date.

So needless to say, I’m grateful for David Hancock and am thrilled that he’s joined me for this conversation. You’ll learn about David’s unique background that led him into publishing, the benefits of writing a book, and how Morgan James approaches publishing differently.

You can connect with David on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Morgan James Publishing.
