In this week’s shorter episodes, we’re talking about a few ways to start writing today. A great way to do this is by starting your first (or next) book.

I know when I mention books you’re probably thinking, “That’s not something I can get started on today.”

To the contrary! All you need to do is to sit down and start working on a couple of things.

First, determine the main idea of the book. Second, who is the ideal reader? And third, start working on an outline. If you’re doing a non-fiction book, I recommend about 35,000-40,000 words, divided into 12-15 chapters.

It doesn’t mean you will be writing the whole book. It just means that you are working on the outline, which will help you get excited and want to move forward. The sheer act of developing an outline will be a huge push forward.

You can get the book written faster than you think. Even if you only write 200 words a day (which is an average page length), you can write a book of 120 pages in 4 months. You can write three of those a year if you just write 1 single page per day. Then, you can put it on Amazon and make it available to the world.

We make the process of writing a book much more stressful and complicated than it needs to be. Take some time today to get started writing your book. You’ll be amazed at what can happen when you take action and get moving.

Question: How could writing a book impact your life or business?

I want to take a couple of minutes to share some specific updates about the podcast, upcoming projects, and other things that will be of interest to you.

1. The Daily Writer Starter Kit. This is our brand-new premium resource for writers. And the good news is that it’s totally free!

The Daily Writer Starter Kit is actually a collection of guides on the most important topics for writers who want to take their craft more seriously and even build a writing business. How do you get these guides? You can visit https://DailyWriterLife.com/free and it will take you right to the page where you can sign up. These guides will be delivered over seven days.

2. The Daily Writer email. When you sign up for the Daily Writer Starter Kit, you will automatically start getting our daily emails, Monday-Friday with a Saturday recap. These emails are basically a written version of each day’s podcast. Some people like to listen to podcasts, and others prefer to read. I like delivering things in both formats, so you’ll get our short daily email delivered right to your inbox every day.

3. Our Daily Writer Fall Retreat. Now in some sense I hesitate to mention this because it’s close to being at capacity and those spots will be filled pretty soon. But I wanted to mention it here because this Fall retreat is our first live event. This will be held in St. Charles, Missouri, close to where I live. We have a really cool location for this small retreat—it will be about 15 people total. The focus of this specific retreat over two days will be putting together a short book.

4. My next book, The Daily Writer: 366 Meditations on Habits, Creativity, and Finding Your Authentic Voice. It releases in January. I’m extremely excited about this book and have been working on it for nearly two years. When I first had the idea for the Daily Writer concept, I was frustrated that I couldn’t find a book of daily inspiration and tips for writers—at least nothing that I liked. So I decided to write it!

I’m excited about these updates and am looking forward to continuing to serve you with the Daily Writer resources!

Every month, we feature two calls in the Daily Writer group from a guest expert, and Lynn was kind enough to walk us through how to repurpose your blog or podcast into a book. This is a vital skill to develop in order to reach many more people with material you’re already producing.
