In your life as a writer, there are many things you get to choose: how and when you write, what kind of material you create, the type of platform you want to build, and so much more.

But there is one thing none of us gets to decide: the times in which we live.

Right now is a period of civil unrest, religious conflict, an uncertain economy, political leaders people don’t trust, and a pace of change that is far too fast than most of us are comfortable with. However, you could say the same for any period of history.

Don’t spend your time and emotional energy worrying about things you can’t change. Instead, focus on setting and achieving your goals, being productive, and adding value to the world through your writing. After all, it’s the only thing you really have any control over.

If you have ever worked on a deadline, you understand the frustration of writing conditions that are not ideal.

This can be a challenge if you think you can only write in certain conditions. The weather has to be just right. It has to be the perfect time of day. You need to have a certain drink or snack. You can only use a certain type of pen. The right kind of music has to be playing. You’re having a good hair day.

Does it help when we have perfect conditions? Of course.

But that’s not how professionals work. They have work to do, and they find a way to get it done.

Take Garrison Keillor, for example. He said, “I can write anywhere. I write in airports. I write on airplanes. I’ve written in the back seats of taxis. I write in hotel rooms. I love hotel rooms. I just write wherever I am whenever I need to write.”

We have it so much easier than writers of past generations.

Our devices let us write wherever we are and upload it to the cloud. We have access to the world’s information at our fingertips. We can publish on a variety of platforms.

Honestly, the only thing stopping us from being productive and successful is the artificial limit we put on ourselves.

You can write anyplace or anytime if you choose. The whole world is your writing desk.
