We’ve been working our way through a series on Making Money as a Writer. Today, we’re talking about two of my favorite methods: memberships and masterminds.

I understand that memberships and masterminds are two different things, but they are similar in many ways, which is why I’ve lumped them together in this episode. The main idea of both of these is that people have access to you on some type of ongoing basis. They are paid products that have a barrier to entry in the form of a payment. By definition, it means that people are generally more serious about growth and learning because they have to pay more than they would for a book.

Now don’t get me wrong, we should offer free help. This podcast, as well as my blog posts and free Daily Writer Starter Kit guides, are my main ways of offering free, helpful content. But if people want to grow, they need to have some skin in the game. The way they show they are serious is if they pay for access.

Memberships and masterminds can have all kinds of different structures. But in general, a membership is a group that has a recurring monthly charge and offers resources, courses, calls, and community interaction. A mastermind is a higher-level group where you have more access to the leader, and you are actively adding value to the other group members to help each other succeed in specific areas.

I currently offer a membership, the Daily Writer Club, which you’ve heard me promote before. I’m also getting ready to launch a higher-level Daily Writer Elite Mastermind in March. I love offering these paid experiences because I know that when people invest in themselves, they will accelerate their success.

A membership or mastermind might be something you should consider, as well. Think about the different types of value you could add to others and if people would be willing to pay for ongoing resources or access to you in these types of formats. You might be surprised how much you enjoy running them and helping your fans and readers in a more direct way.

Question: What specific ways could you help people be more successful by offering a membership or mastermind?

I want to take a couple of minutes to share some specific updates about the podcast, upcoming projects, and other things that will be of interest to you.

1. The Daily Writer Starter Kit. This is our brand-new premium resource for writers. And the good news is that it’s totally free!

The Daily Writer Starter Kit is actually a collection of guides on the most important topics for writers who want to take their craft more seriously and even build a writing business. How do you get these guides? You can visit https://DailyWriterLife.com/free and it will take you right to the page where you can sign up. These guides will be delivered over seven days.

2. The Daily Writer email. When you sign up for the Daily Writer Starter Kit, you will automatically start getting our daily emails, Monday-Friday with a Saturday recap. These emails are basically a written version of each day’s podcast. Some people like to listen to podcasts, and others prefer to read. I like delivering things in both formats, so you’ll get our short daily email delivered right to your inbox every day.

3. Our Daily Writer Fall Retreat. Now in some sense I hesitate to mention this because it’s close to being at capacity and those spots will be filled pretty soon. But I wanted to mention it here because this Fall retreat is our first live event. This will be held in St. Charles, Missouri, close to where I live. We have a really cool location for this small retreat—it will be about 15 people total. The focus of this specific retreat over two days will be putting together a short book.

4. My next book, The Daily Writer: 366 Meditations on Habits, Creativity, and Finding Your Authentic Voice. It releases in January. I’m extremely excited about this book and have been working on it for nearly two years. When I first had the idea for the Daily Writer concept, I was frustrated that I couldn’t find a book of daily inspiration and tips for writers—at least nothing that I liked. So I decided to write it!

I’m excited about these updates and am looking forward to continuing to serve you with the Daily Writer resources!

You might know (or maybe you don’t) that about a year ago, I left my full-time job as a college professor to do ghostwriting full-time. That’s my main gig, but I also run The Daily Writer Club, which is our membership community, as well as produce this daily podcast. I also write my own books.

Most writers have a desire to make money and build either a part-time or full-time career with their writing, so we’re going to lean into this topic for a while. As I’ve thought about my own journey and examined the journey of many other writers I know who have successful businesses, I’ve distilled it down into 7 key components.

Before I give you the 7 steps, let me share with you the key idea of what this is all about:

Key Idea: The Writer’s Path is a sequential, achievable process to help you build a multi-faceted, robust writing business based on a growing network and multiple streams of income.

Let’s break this down into 7 clear steps:

  1. Clarify a powerful message for a specific audience.
  2. Build the platforms where you will share your content.
  3. Write consistent content that helps your readers.
  4. Publish and market books that solve problems for your audience.
  5. Expand your network of friends, fans, and connections.
  6. Create streams of income based on your writing and services.
  7. Practice key habits for wellness, productivity, and success.

For the next couple of weeks, I’m going to give you an introduction to this concept of the Writer’s Path. Then, over the next few months, we will dive into each one of these steps in detail.

This material is part of a course I’m teaching right now in our Daily Writer Club, so if you’d like to dive into this material immediately and work through it with a group of positive, motivated writers, make sure to check it out by going to DailyWriterLife.com!

Daily Question: Do you want to build a business around your writing? If so, why?
