A big challenge that we face in our creative work is simply the fact that we work alone much of the time. Even if you work with a team on projects that include editors, graphic designers, beta readers, maybe co-authors or collaborators, or marketing people, you are still spending a large percentage of your time creating alone.

If you work from home, you can easily isolate yourself from other people who can give you emotional and creative nourishment. If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that we need each other. You can have all the success in the world, but what is the point if you don’t have friends who will share the journey?

My guest today is the perfect person to help us think about how to make and grow our friendships as writers. His name is Jared Odle, and he is a missionary, copywriter, and business leader. He is working on a book and podcast related to loneliness and has done a lot of research and thinking about this topic.

Jared and I have also been friends for nearly 30 years. We went to college together, sang on a traveling music team together, and now we are both heavily engaged in writing as part of our businesses.

Jared is also part of our Daily Writer Community. A couple of months ago, he led a call on the topic of friendships, and I’m excited to share this recording with you on this episode. We discuss why it can be hard for creative people to make friends, as well as some practical tips for building and growing friendships.

I know that writers tend to gravitate toward topics like how to write a book or secrets of marketing, and those are important. But on this episode, we’re getting to the heart of what it means to have good relationships and why you need a support system of friends.

On this episode, I’m thrilled to be joined by one of my best friends in the world, Jared Odle. He’s a missionary, copywriter, and an all-around fantastic guy. This will be the first of probably lots of conversations we feature here on the podcast on different topics related to writing.

Today we discuss the topic: What does it mean to be an A+ writer? How do we determine what excellence is? What’s our standard? This is a fascinating conversation, and I hope this inspires you to keep doing the work and not get hung up on trying to be perfect.

When you think of ways to connect with your audience and add value to them, what comes to mind?

What usually focus on the more flashy forms of marketing such as social media, Amazon algorithms or Facebook ads. But there’s a way to connect with your readers that relies on a decades-old technology we use every day. It’s not flashy, it’s not the new, hip thing, but it absolutely works.

Yes, I’m talking about email newsletters.

I’m excited to have a guest today who knows all about email newsletters, and he is going to help us decipher the code to using them successfully. His name is Jared Odle, and he is a missionary, entrepreneur, and freelance copywriter and marketer.

Most of the time, he lives in Ghana, West Africa close to the city of Tamale with his wife and kids. Jared is also working on a book and podcast related to men’s loneliness.

Jared and I go way, way back. We were both students at St. Louis Christian College in Florissant, Missouri back in the mid-90’s. We had many, many classes together, and we also traveled together on the weekend in a music group for a couple of years.

We have seen the best and worst of each other through the years, and I am absolutely honored to call Jared one of my best friends on the planet!

Jared also has an incredibly sharp marketing mind, which is why I’ve invited him on the show today to talk about newsletters–an area where he particularly excels.

In this conversation, we talk about several topics related to newsletters, including why you need one, what you should include in your indoctrination series (he’ll explain what that is), what to use for a lead magnet, and much more.

You can connect with Jared at his website, JaredOdle.com as well as Linkedin, or on Facebook.

Thanks for Listening!
